Akita vs. Shiba Inu: What's the Difference?

Akita and Shiba Inu are both Japanese dog breeds that have some similarities, but also significant differences.

Appearance: Akitas are larger and heavier than Shiba Inus. Adult Akitas typically weigh between 70 and 130 pounds, while adult Shiba Inus weigh between 17 and 23 pounds. Akitas also have a larger, more robust head and a thicker coat. Both breeds have a double coat, but the Akita's coat is longer and fluffier. The Shiba Inu's coat comes in a variety of colors, including red, black and tan, and sesame. Akitas, on the other hand, come in a limited range of colors, including white, brindle, and red.

Temperament: Akitas are known for their loyalty, courage, and protectiveness. They can be reserved with strangers, but are typically affectionate and gentle with their family. Shiba Inus are more independent and aloof than Akitas. They are often described as "cat-like" in their behavior, and can be somewhat aloof with strangers. Shiba Inus are also known for their high energy levels and can be quite vocal.
